Safe, slick and sexy! - Dr. Dick

Safe, slick and sexy!

Dear, Dr. Dick.

I recently went into a sex shop to purchase some lube. I walked in and immediately found myself overwhelmed with all of the options to choose from. There are so many different types of lube, such as water-based, silicone-based, and oil-based. I have no idea what makes these kinds so different from each other. I am a newly out gay male who is also new to anal sex... I was way too embarrassed to ask the cute guy in the store what lubes are best for anal play. So that is why I am coming to you with this question, so Dr. Dick what lubes are best for anal sex and why?!

Sincerely,

Lou B.

Dear Lou B,

That's a great question and also a very important one! Not all lubricants are safe for anal sex and there are other sorts of "scientific" things to consider when choosing a lube as well.

There are three different types of lube commonly available:

·         Water-based lube is an all-purpose and most common lubricant, since they're safe to use with toys and condoms. The one drawback is that they do dry up easily, so it needs to be re-applied as it dries up.

·         Silicone-based lube lasts longer than waster-based. Silicone lube can't be used with silicone toys due to the silicone-on-silicone reaction. Also silicone based lubricants are harder to wash off bedding and are usually more expensive than water-based.

·         Finally, there's oil-based lube such as Vaseline, vitamin E, and coconut oil. These lubricants can be great for hand jobs, but they are not safe for use with latex products or rubber toys as they break down the latex. Oil-based lube cannot be used with condoms as it will create small tears in the condom.

Silicone lubricant is by far the most popular and widely used lube for anal play. However it isn't the only type of lubricant that can be used during hot and heavy intercourse. Silicone is popular among the crystal community due to its "slip n' slide" characteristics.  Only a few drops are needed! It might be harder to wash off your sheets but the hard ride is well worth the cleanup and dish soap is great cleaning agent - it's gentle on the skin and toys!
